How Do I Know Whom To Trust?

The great divide of life is often filled with dangerous predators, with canines sharpened and ready for the hunt. It is therefore imperative that each one of us at this trying time understand the word trust and how we can use to our advantage.

The word Trust means confidence in and reliance on good qualities like—honour, bravery, fairness, truth and etcetera. This implies that before we put our trust (confidence) on any one that person must first of all possess two or more of the qualities mentioned above. Honour, bravery, fairness, truth: unfortunately I must say, these are all qualities our generation have forgotten.

Fredrick Nietzsche once said that, “Man is a rope, tied between beast and Superman—a rope over an abyss.” The only thing that differentiate man from beast his not just his super intelligence, it is his humanity. Humanity is what essentially differentiates man from a beast. And humanity is based on trust, which is in turn based on: bravery, honour, fairness, love, good conscience etcetera, etcetera.  In other for you to know whom to trust, you must first ensure that you have noticed at least more than two these qualities in the person. Although I must add that Nietzsche had a different idea of his ideal man—what he termed, “Superman.”

In order for us to properly understand the concept of trust and whom to trust, we would be taking a look at five of the most important quality one most look for before deciding to trust anyone. They are:
·         Honesty: is defined as the quality, condition, or characteristic of being fair, truthful and morally upright. This is the number one and most important quality to look for in a potential candidate you want to trust. When a person possesses this quality, you can be sure he will die with your secret, or if for any reason at all he misplaces that trust it will not be for selfish reasons and he would spend the rest of his life atoning for that mistake voluntarily.

·         Loyalty: is simply complete and utter fidelity. The next in the line to the most important qualities. The person should be a devoted patriot—unwilling to break his vow no matter the consequences. Even if he is captured in enemy territory. You can be sure like the good soldiers he would rather see himself quickly dead than spill any state secret.

·         Good Conscience: is the ability to feel guilty when wrong. This is often believed to be a weakness, especially among Machiavellians. But I want to assure you that this is in away the most important characteristic to look for. Why? Perhaps you’ve read countless stories of people who were loyal to their masters for many years and latter broke that trust for, “a higher price.” Although loyalty and honesty is good, a person without a good conscience (with emphasis on the word ‘good’) is the very definition of a beast. He would betray you at the slightest logical opportunity, but someone with the fear of guilt (good conscience) would hold on no matter what, like a patriotic patriot.

·         Fairness. If you have any intentions of entrusting any critical position to a person, this is the next quality you must look at for. Fairness simply means: just. The person must the righteous of heart. Especially if that person would be in charge of anything related to money. The temptations that are part of such positions are particularly mouth-watering and if the person is not just, he would bow to it and embezzle the money meant for others.

·         Love. The last of the five most important quality. Nietzsche captured it perfectly well; he said: “When a man is in love, he endures more than at other times—he submits to all.” Love inspires passion, and passion in turn inspires loyalty and honesty, which in turn expedites productivity. Simply put: the person should/ must be in love with you and your course (it must be the both) or he would betray you at a certain point in time.
There is no easy way. There are lots of ups and downs on the road to trust but with enough persistence, I assure you, it is possible. So, in summary, before you decide to trust anyone ask yourself five simple questions:

·         Is he honest?

·         Is he loyal?

·         Does he have a good conscience?

·         His he Just?

·         Does he love me and my course?

If the answer is yes to all of the above (and it must be yes to all of the above, else it is non-valid) then and only then can you trust that person.

As you take this most important step in your life, I want you to remember this: No Risk, No Reward. You have to risk being lied to, in order to find honesty.
